As it consumes large volumes of gas, ENDESA has secured long-term supplies of the natural gas it needs for generation and supply purposes.
In 2001, 25% of the contract for the pipeline supplying gas from Algeria was awarded with ENDESA winning around 18%.
Also, ENDESA signed two long-term contracts in 2003 with Nigeria LNG Limited and Ras Laffan LNG Limited of Qatar to supply each company 1 bcm as from 2006 and 2005, respectively. These contracts are in addition to those already in place with Gas Natural and Sonatrach.
ENDESA has a significant position in the main regasification plant projects being developed or in the project phase: Reganosa (Galicia), Sagunto (Valencia Region) and Gascan (Canary Islands).
ENDESA also holds 12% of MEDGAZ, an enterprise to promote the study and development of a gas pipeline between Algeria and Spain.
MEDGAZ was created in 2001 to research, design, build and operate the gas pipeline which link Algeria to Europe via Spain. It is a consortium formed by five energy companies which are recognised worldwide for their technical and financial credentials: Cepsa and Iberdrola (with 20% each), ENDESA and Gaz de France-Suez (with 12% each) and Sonatrach (with 36%).
With an initial capacity to transport 8 millon m3. MEDGAZ will transport natural gas from Beni-Saf, on the Algerian coast, to Almería. It will be 210 km long, on the Mediterranean sea-bed at a maximum depth of 2,160 metres
MEDGAZ is a strategic project for Algeria, Spain and the rest of Europe. As a result, it has been approved by the European Commission as a "Project of Priority Interest within Trans-European Networks in the Energy Sector". In Spain, the Ministry of Industry has recently classified MEDGAZ as a "priority project", for considering it an important pipeline for the seccurity of supply.
DISTRIBUTION INFRASTRUCTURES
ENDESA Gas, through several distribution companies in which it owns shareholdings, has built 416 km of pipeline in Spain in 2008 taking its distribution network to 4,049 km, 7% more than the previous year.
TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURES
ENDESA operates in the gas transport sector through the stakes held by Endesa Gas in several gas transport companies. These companies currently have a transport network with several construction projects for gas pipelines underway, which will increase the ENDESA Gas network to 859 km by the end of 2009.
